HIKING ROUTE / TIMMESØ MOUNTAIN
THE ROUTE GOES FROM THE GEOCENTER MØNS KLINT SOUTH OVER THE STEEP HILLS TO THE SHELTER PLACE.
Then west past Siesøen to Timmesøbjerg. At the top of Timmesøbjerg are the remains of a fortress of refuge, which is Denmark's oldest defensive structure dating back to the Bronze Age. The forest has been untouched for many years, so there are many dead troll forest-like trees on the route. Here you will also find some of the oldest beech trees in Denmark. Several of them are more than 400 years old.
On the way back to the GeoCenter, the route passes Forchhammers Pynt and the Queen's Throne, the highest point of Møns Klint. Here you have a fantastic view of the cliff and the Baltic Sea.
Length: 3,1 km
Duration: approx. 1 hour
MIRACULOUS BRONZEALDERBORG
Timmesøbjerg hides the remains of a rampart on the north and west sides of the 'mountain'. Recent studies indicate that Timmesøbjerg in the Bronze Age approx. 800 – 500 BC has functioned as a refuge. The more than 100 burial mounds in Klinteskoven and grave finds from Busende Have on the south coast tell us that Møn was a rich community back then. The Baltic Sea was a main thoroughfare, and when foreign boats showed up at sea, people on Østmøn probably sought refuge on Timmesø Bjerg. The southern and eastern sides are so steep that it has not been necessary to build ramparts as defensive structures. Similar refuge castles are known from i.a. Sweden, Poland and the Baltic countries.
