The nutrient-poor limestone grasslands on Høje Møn are home to a number of wild orchids. Some of them grow here as the only place in Denmark.
The nutrient-poor limestone grasslands on Høje Møn are home to as many as 18 out of Denmark's approx. 42 species of wild orchids, several of which are extremely rare – or completely absent – elsewhere in the country.
The orchids grow e.g. on Høvblege, south of Klinteskoven, where they thrive in the open, hilly terrain due to the high content of lime in the soil.
Because the chalk here is right up on the ground surface, the soil is unsuitable for cultivation. Høvblege has therefore been left open as grazing land for over 100 years.
Both Høvblege and the Jydelejet area north of Klinteskoven are the type of landscape that is called overland. Today, this type of landscape is in sharp decline in Denmark, and Høvblege and Jydelejet are some of the finest examples of this landscape.
The orchids bloom at different times throughout the summer season, and it is therefore different which species you can meet in nature, depending on the time.
The largest and most conspicuous are the hornwort (blooming in July) and the maywort (blooming in May and early June).
