Klinteskoven is Denmark's most important occurrence of beech forest on limestone soil and is incredibly rich in wonderful natural experiences.
In Klinteskoven, deciduous forest alternates with conifers, and the forest offers great experiences with lakes and steep hills, soft valleys and swamps. The rugged terrain constantly opens up new experiences, and there are ample opportunities to study floral flora and birdlife. Some of Denmark's oldest beech trees grow on Timmesøbjerg. Several of them are more than 400 years old and can thus be dated back to the time of Christian VI. Usually beech trees grow max. 200 years, but the trees here are particularly strong and resistant to fungal attack. This is because the trees have an extremely low growth rate, which, among other things, can see the rings in the tree, which are very close. The slow growth is due to a lack of the nutrients iron and manganese, which bind hard to the lime in the soil and thus prevent the trees from absorbing the important growth substances. The soil layer here is particularly thin, and there is not far down to the chalk. It is for the same reason that the leaves of the trees are often more yellow than green. This condition is called chlorosis. Large parts of Klinteskoven are untouched forest and have been for a long time. Here, nature is allowed to take care of itself.
The part of Klinteskoven that borders Klintholm Estate is private. But you must travel here from 6 in the morning until sunset, as long as you stick to the roads and paths.
In connection with the GeoCenter's opening in 2007, the film "Klinteskoven" was made, directed and written by Rumle Hammerich. The film is an experience through the almost untouched forest that surrounds Møns Klint.
