The large blue was formerly widespread in many places in Denmark, but now has its only remaining habitat at Høvblege on Høje Møn.
The beautiful large blue butterfly is extremely picky with its choice of habitat, and is therefore extinct in the rest of the country. And then it has an absolutely incredible life cycle! The female lays her eggs on either Thyme or Marjoram. The larva crawls out of the egg, which for the first few weeks eats the small shoots of the plant. It then lets itself fall to the ground, where it lies and waits for a Red Stinging Ant to find it. The butterfly larva secretes scents that cause the ant to take it down to the anthill. Down here, the caterpillar is allowed to be in peace, as it secretes a sugary secretion on its back. The ants eat it, just like they do with aphids. The larva lives the rest of the summer, autumn, winter and spring with the ants, where it feeds on the ants' own larvae. Finally, it pupates and in July crawls out of the anthill as a fully hatched butterfly. Now it only has a very short time to swarm, mate, lay eggs and die before life goes on for the next generation.
The newly started EU-supported project 'Life Orchids' aims to promote the unique limestone meadows on which the bluebird depends, but also simply to actively expand the distribution of the large blue to more grassland areas on Høje Møn.
